The exhibition in the old schoolroom in Stuben was opened on Friday 07.02.2025 and is open daily with free admission from 09:00 to 17:00. Access is via the church portal.
As part of a project funded by the European Union's Leader program, the old schoolroom in the annex of the parish church "Our Lady of the Nativity" has been adapted into a space for exhibitions and for communicating local history. The concept for this was developed in a participatory process with the local population. The first exhibition is dedicated to the room itself, which housed the Stuben school for around 300 years. Further topics are to follow in the future.
The initiative is supported by the Stuben am Arlberg tourist office.
In a participatory project and workshop with the people of Stuben, memories of the old school and the lessons at the time, as well as photographs from various family albums, were collected last year in 2024. Atelier Raos in Dornbirn was commissioned to develop a logo and CI.
Further research into the processing and collection of historical facts by curator Christof Thöny led to various conversations with contemporary witnesses, former pupils and teachers. In this context, a Stubner school chronicle was secured, which was passed on from the respective teacher to his successor and will now be archived in the Klostertal Museum. The German photographer Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger spent a winter vacation (1938/39) in Stuben. During this time, she took a series of remarkable pictures of the one-class elementary school. Photographs from this series were published in an article in a German illustrated magazine.
The oldest references to a school in Stuben date back to the 17th century. During this time, the village was elevated to its own parish in 1666, independent of the mother parish of Klösterle. The church received generous support from parish priest Heinrich Schneider. The son of the Landamman of the Sonnenberg dominion donated to the new parish of Stuben as well as to the "Schulalpe". The reference dating back to 1680 suggests that there was already a school in the remote village at this time, although it was certainly modest.
You can find out the whole story behind the further development of the school system in the exhibition in the Old Schoolroom, which will be on display until the end of September 2025.
