People & stories

Zürs boasts the “Edelweiß” and “Alpenrose” guesthouses, each with 80 beds, while Lech has the “Krone” and “Post” guesthouses; all were fully occupied from Christmas 1924 to beyond Easter, with guests generally changing every 8 to 14 days, a sign that this area remains lively throughout the year. In Zürs there is a formal ski school with the renowned teachers Albert Mathies, Toni Schneider, Keßler and Ganner.
Bludenzer Anzeiger, April 25, 1925

Albert Mathies (1891-1963) is one of the most important ski pioneers of Stuben am Arlberg. The younger brother of “Avalanche Franz Josef” and Theresia Mathies (later the wife of Viktor Sohm), he learned to ski even as a youngster together with Hannes Schneider, and was the first ski instructor to be appointed in Vorarlberg at the resort of Bödele. After six years spent as a prisoner of the USSR he became the very first ski instructor in Zürs in 1921.
